Pillowcase Tutorial

This tutorial covers making a standard pillowcase. Larger size options are provided at the end. Use fabric at least 42″ wide, removing any selvage edges.

Materials Needed:
• Main Body: 27″ x 42″
• Piping/Trim: 1-5/8″ x 42″
• Cuff: 12″ x 42″

Instructions:
• Fold piping in half with wrong sides together and iron to create a narrow strip.
• Layer fabrics flat with raw edges aligned:
• 12″ cuff right side up
• Trim folded and pressed
• 27″ main body right side down
• Pin along the width and stitch the raw edges with a 3/8″ seam.
• Roll up the main body fabric to fit inside the cuff. (Image below

• Wrap the cuff fabric around the rolled main body, right sides facing in and pin raw edges. (Image below)

• Stitch raw edges with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
• Pull out the main body fabric from the cuff, hiding the stitches inside the cuff, and press flat.

To Assemble Pillowcase with a French Seam:

• Fold the pillowcase in half with wrong sides together.
• Press and pin raw edges starting at the cuff join.
• Stitch a 1/4″ seam around the raw edges and corner.
• Turn the pillowcase inside out, press, and sew a 1/2″ seam along the same sides, enclosing all raw edges.
• Turn the pillowcase right side out to finish.
Your pillowcase is now complete.
