Woodland Ridge Retreat recently hosted Mary Sue Fenner’s Shop and Sew: One of a Kind Garment Workshop
Mary Sue helped student plan, shop for fabric and sew a one-of-a-kind garment in this five day workshop. Mary Sue teaches classic, traditional and contemporary sewing and finishing techniques to create a one of a kind wearable garment. Her trunk show consist of 70 garments students can try on, and photograph for inspiration. Some of the garments Mary Sue brought to the class were made from Kanthas (many layers of old cotton or silk saris that have been stitched together) block printed cotton and indigo dyed fabric purchased from Cultural Cloth. Cultural Cloth sells fair trade textiles direct from the maker that support women’s cooperatives in 31 countries! In the age of Covid 19, students took a socially distanced bus ride to Cultural Cloth, Treadle Yard Goods and SR Harris to shop for textiles. Some even made a second trip to Cultural cloth later in the week! Students loved the class so much that Mary Sue is planning another class at Woodland Ridge Retreat in late February 2021.
